Spooky Scary Storytime Part 3

So, while we’re on the topic of creepy, and since we've already had a spotlight on Kaedyn the ghost magnet, and me the possessed, let me introduce you to Dante...or Gemma?

Dante is sweet. Dante is clever. Dante is also, apparently, not from around here...

Let’s rewind to when Dante was three.

This tiny human toddles up to me one day and, with all the casual confidence in the world and says:
“My name is Gemma. I was shot. I was fighting in a war.”

I’m sorry, WHAT?!

He dropped that bombshell like he was telling me what he had for lunch. Meanwhile, I was standing there like a ghost had just slapped me.

Of course, woo-woo me kicks in immediately. I ask questions because my curiosity has piqued.
Which war?
When?
Where?
How?

I don’t get all the answers. But he mentions Halloween. That night, I’m lying in bed, and this has been sitting with me all day so naturally I google... Halloween...war!

The Vietnam War began on November 1st.

Yep. Halloween, almost!

I didn’t go digging through military records, but that can't be a coincidence. That timing? The detail and matter-of-fact delivery from a toddler?

It shook me...we've all heard of kids who can recount their past life, but it actually happened to us!

There’s something wild about kids. Their innocence makes it even spookier because you know they’re not lying. They’re not faking, they are too young to make something like that up with such detail. They’re not pulling up Google Maps and plotting a backstory. They’re just telling you what they know. And what Dante knew was a whole other life.

And honestly, that wasn’t even the last time he said strange things that sounded like echoes from another timeline. He’s always had this quiet depth, like he’s older than his body wants you to believe. He's always been obsessed with war, he was able to shoot a moving target at 5yrs old. No scope, just talent...natural born killer 😬

When Your Kid Finally Loves Therapy

There was a time when therapy felt like war. Not the inspirational movie kind. The real kind. The one with screaming, resistance, heartbreak, and me standing in the hallway taking deep breaths as I fought back tears, telling myself this is good for him. Kaedyn has hated therapy more times than I can count. And honestly? I’ve tried to black out most of those sessions.... #PTSD But this year… something changed. A 'Changing Place?'

We talk a lot about inclusive cities or smart cities. Buzzwords like accessibility, universal design, and diversity are tossed around in policy documents and press releases as if they’re already achieved. But here’s the truth: If your city doesn’t have adequate Changing Places facilities, then your city is not inclusive. It’s not accessible. And it’s definitely not modern. Changing Places are fully accessible bathrooms designed for people with complex disabilities. They go well beyond standard accessible toilets and include: An adult-sized, height-adjustable change table, a  ceiling hoist system, e nough space for a wheelchair user and multiple carers, a  privacy screen or curtain.  In short: basic dignity. If you’ve never needed a Changing Place, chances are you’ve never checked whether one exists nearby. But for families like mine, our entire day hinges on finding one.
