We aren't Mundane π
Being an author can look and sometimes even feel like such a mundane thing, that isn't really a job, it's just something someone 'does'.
It’s very easy to reduce it to words on a page or screen accomoanied by late nights and cold coffee. From the outside, it doesn’t always look extraordinary...
But if you stop and you look at who is writing, you will see there are people like Kaedyn — pouring his entire lived experience into his story, shaped by a lifetime of therapy, resilience, and courage far beyond his years.
You think of Jess, writing through a stage four brain cancer diagnosis, choosing to leave behind something meaningful, something lasting, even in the face of the unimaginable. Rising to the challenge like a gladiator to set an example for others by guiding not belittling.
Or Sam whose work and advocacy for inclusion, and her unwavering commitment to Fletch, ripples far beyond anything that could ever be considered “mundane.”
And suddenly, writing isn't small anymore, it's essential.
Through and through, I am a fantasy girl.
Give me the werewolves, the bat boys, the dragons and brimstone. Give me the ruined love arcs, the aching tension, the complex characters that don't stand a chance at clawing their way through impossible worlds.
That is where my inner child frolics❤️
But every now and then, it is deeply, sometimes painfully refreshing to step into something real that grounds you, and is so honest it makes you feel something unexplainable.
Stories that don’t need magic to be powerful, because the truth within them is already enough.
There is a different kind of bravery in these stories.
Ones that doesn’t need epic battles to be gut wrenching, but instead have their own vulnerability through lived experience.
And I think, as authors, that’s something we should never forget.
Whether we are building entire realms or telling stories rooted in our own reality, what we are really doing is the same thing:
We are giving pieces of ourselves to the world.
We are creating space for others to feel seen, we are lending our voices.
And sometimes, without even realising it, we are creating something that someone else might need to survive their own challenging story.
Being an author is not mundane...
It is empowering, and vulnerable, but in the right hands, it's life-changing.
I have always believed that everyone has a story to tell, whether it be fiction or nonfiction.
Today I got to run a workshop to equip aspiring authors with the tools and platforms they need to successfully publish their work. It felt rewarding. It always does, I've done this before, it isn't new to me!
But after reading Jess's book today something in me just cheered, I got to help her share her story... And what a story it is!
